Lamp Information

Welcome to the first step in knowing more about what makes your gel work best ...

You are one of the smart people who actually want to know about lamps.  You understand that the quality of the gel has as much to do with the lamp as it does the gel formulation.  This understanding is the first step in ensuring that your gel of choice is a success.  The next step is using the right lamp.  Please look below to see more.  I also encourage you to look at the education link above.  That link will lead you to our education area of our site.  There you will find the Tehnical Brochure information.  Open up the brochure and see what we have to say about lights and lamps.

The real principles of lamp technology are very basic in nature and you will find them simple to grasp once I explain them here:

  1. If a lamp size is increased, then the number of bulbs must also increase to have the same curing power.
  2. The curing power of a lamp will decrease as the bulbs are raised away from the fingers
  3. The curing power of a lamp will increase if you change from 4-watt bulbs to 9-watt bulbs.
  4. 9-watt bulbs have twice the curing power than 8-watt bulbs.
  5. UV light intensity decreases signifiacntly over distance.
  6. UV bulbs will continue tp produce visible light after they stop producing UV light.

When I give a class in UV lights and curing technology, I tell the class to imagine that the room we are in is a UV curing lamp.  I ask them to imagine a small 25-watt incandescent light bulb is in the center of the ceiling.  There would not be very much light for us to see.  Now, I ask them to imagine that the entire ceiling and walls are covered by fluorescent bulbs.  Obviously there would be plenty of light for us to see.  Now, to examplify "Concept 1" above, if we made the room 10 times largerwhile maintaining the same number of fluorescent bulbs, then there would be far less light for us to enjoy.  To examplify "Concept 2 & 5" above, then let's continue to imagine the oringinal room size with fluorescent bulbs, but now imagine the ceiling is now 30 feet away.  We have dramatically increased the size of the lamp and subsequently reduced the curing power.  "Concept 3 & 4" rely on numbers known by all quality UV bulb manufacturers: 9-watt UV bulbs emmitt twice as much UV light as an 8-watt bulb and nearly 7 times more UV light than a 4-watt bulb.  You justhve to trust me on this fact or read my information found in the Technical Brochure on the website in the Education section. "Concept 6" is something that you know but just maynot have realized it.  Tanning bed bulbs are very strong when they are new - and you can feel it after tanning.  When the bulbs are old, you know it because you don't feel like you got a good tan when you got out of the tanning bed.  In fact, you can use the tanning bed example for all of these concepts above.  Imaging that the tanning bed has only half the bulbs "on", or that the lid of the tanning bed is lifted, or that the 32-watt bulbs are replaced with 24-watt bulbs.  Now, if you want to learn more, then read the section in the Education page in the Technical Brochure.  If you have any further questions, please call us at (800) 275-5596.

Sincerely,

Jim McConnell
